Active fire protection measures are those that ensure the extinguishing of a fire in its initial phase. These measures are also designed to prevent the spreading of a fire through a building or an industrial plant.

These active protection measures fall into two basic sections, detection and extinction. Detection can be done by means of sensing smoke or increases in temperature.

Also, smoke detection can be ionic or optical.
The extinguishing can utilize automatic or manual elements. The installations often combine both types of elements.
